RestoringVision, a global non-profit committed to providing vision screening and near-vision eyeglasses to people living in low-income communities, has joined forces with RFHA to deliver one of the most transformative forms of health intervention, clear sight. The partnership aligns seamlessly with RFHA’s mission to remove barriers to health and RestoringVision’s model of integrating their work into trusted, high-impact programs.

Why Vision Matters More Than We Realise

Around the world, hundreds of millions of people struggle with impaired near-vision, particularly presbyopia, a condition that universally affects people as they age. While it is easily corrected with a simple pair of reading glasses, access is a major barrier.

RestoringVision notes that the majority of people who need eyeglasses live in low-income communities and often go without them for years. For many, this means difficulty reading, working, caring for their families, participating in community life or even engaging in personal worship.

This partnership brings vision services directly into RFHA’s community health sites, where people come for HIV testing, NCD screening, maternal and child health services, mental health support and more. It strengthens the holistic approach RFHA has been refining for over a decade.

A Pilot with Far-Reaching Potential

The initial rollout focuses on South Africa, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Malawi, where thousands already attend RFHA Family Health Days annually. RestoringVision integrates seamlessly into these programs, bringing screening tools, eyeglasses and trained support to complement RFHA’s broader services.

When Vision Becomes a Story of Humanity

Data matters, but stories move people. During the South Africa RFHD launch, RFHA’s team captured beneficiary interviews that revealed the emotional impact of this new service.

One particularly moving moment involved an elderly woman, around 80 to 85 years old, who received reading glasses for the first time. When she put them on, her face lit up. Looking down at her hands, she smiled and said, “Now I can read my Bible.”

This simple interaction captured what RestoringVision has championed for years - clear vision is not just a medical need, it is deeply personal, enabling connection, independence and dignity.

Working Together for Long-Term Community Impact

The partnership model is simple. RFHA provides the community platform and access, RestoringVision provides the vision care expertise. Both organizations are committed to building sustainable, long-term collaboration.

RestoringVision has previously worked with Rotary International, making this new partnership with RFHA a natural evolution. 

Looking Ahead

With 60,000 pairs of reading glasses committed to the first phase alone and community health days scheduled across multiple countries, thousands more will soon have access to something many take for granted - the ability to see clearly.

As this partnership evolves, both organizations remain committed to expanding access, strengthening local health systems and sharing the stories that remind us why this work matters.
